From Proto-Indo-European *méǵʰ(s)ri (locative), from *me (“with”) (cf. μετά (metá)) and *ǵʰes- (“hand”) (whence χείρ (kheír)). Cognate with its zero-grade ἄχρι (ákhri), Old Armenian մերձ (merj).
