From Proto-Indo-European *yeh₃s-, related to Lithuanian júosta (girdle), Latvian jôsta (girdle), Avestan 𐬫𐬁𐬵- (yāh-, girdle), 𐬫𐬁𐬯𐬙𐬀 (yāsta, girdled), Albanian ngjesh (to gird).
