βαλανεῖον

Ancient Greek

Alternative forms

  • βᾰλᾰνῖον (balanîon), βᾰλᾰνῆον (balanêon)

Etymology

From βᾰλᾰνεύς (balaneús, bath-man), with further origin uncertain. Attempts have been made to connect with βάλανος (bálanos, acorn), but are semantically unconvincing. Probably Pre-Greek. Compare also Old Georgian აბანო (abano).
