First attested in 1856.[1] From απολιθω(νω) (apolitho(no), fossilize) + -μα (-ma, neuter suffix). Morphologically from από (apó, from) + λίθος (líthos, stone) + -μα (-ma, suffix). For sense fossil, calque of French pétrification. For figurative senses, calque of French fossile.[2]
