ακανθόχοιρος
Greek
Etymology
From Ancient Greek ἀκανθόχοιρος (akanthókhoiros, “porcupine”), from ἄκανθος (ákanthos, “acanthus, a prickly plant”) + χοῖρος (khoîros, “pig”). Displaced Ancient Greek ὕστριξ (hústrix, “porcupine, bristles, torture instrument”). Secondary sense of hedgehog displaced Ancient Greek ἐχῖνος (ekhînos, “hedgehog, etc.”).
Doublet of σκαντζόχοιρος (skantzóchoiros).
