From Proto-Vietic *tap, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *ɟt₁ap (layer, to superimpose); cognate with Mon တပ် (to place in sequence, arrange in order, to lay on, inflict, to fold), Khmer ស្រទប (srâtôb) and Khasi syrtap (fold, layer).
