émarger

French

Etymology

From é- + marge + -er.

Verb

émarger

  1. to initial (a document)
  2. to sign, sign in
  3. to annotate, make marginal notes in
  4. to draw one's salary

Conjugation

This is a regular -er verb, but the stem is written émarge- before endings that begin with -a- or -o- (to indicate that the -g- is a “soft” /ʒ/ and not a “hard” /ɡ/). This spelling-change occurs in all verbs in -ger, such as neiger and manger.
