From a conflation of Middle High German anelich, enlich (alike; similar) (from Old High German anagilih, from ana + gilih) and Middle High German einlich, enlich (uniform; consistent). Cognate with Middle Dutch aenlijck, Middle English anlike, anlyke, anlich, onlich, Old Norse álíkr. More at alike; only.
