Etymology

From Old Spanish angel (cf. Ladino andjel), borrowed from Late Latin angelus (“messenger, angel”), or alternatively perhaps an early borrowing from Old Occitan (compare Catalan and Occitan àngel) or a Gallo-Romance language, explaining the lack of a final -o; a variant dialectal form ángelo is attested, however.[1] Compare also the development of the inherited Portuguese anjo. The Latin word itself derives from Ancient Greek ἄγγελος (ángelos, “messenger, envoy, angel”).
