Variant of sulla, from Andalusian Arabic سوللا, from Arabic سِلَّة (sillah, “thorn”); compare to Classical Syriac ܣܠܬܐ (seltāʾ, saltāʾ, “moss, lichen, seawead; a contemptible plant”) and Hebrew סִלֹּון (sillōn, “briar”).
