Etymology

From Old Portuguese, from an earlier form *jĩbro < *jĩebro, from Vulgar Latin *iiniperus, jiniperus (attested in the Appendix Probi), cf. also *jeniperus, *jinepirus, Late Latin zyniperum, from Latin jūniperus, iūniperus. Compare Galician cimbro, Spanish enebro. Doublet of the learned borrowing junípero.
