From Old Spanish, from Vulgar Latin *iiniperus, jiniperus (attested in the Appendix Probi), cf. also *jeniperus, *jinepirus, from Latin jūniperus, iūniperus. Doublet of junípero, a learned borrowing, and ginebra[1].
