From Middle High German zeigen, from Old High German zeigōn. Probably derived from an ancestor of zeihen. Ultimately related to Proto-Germanic *taikijaną. Cognate with English teach, Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐍄𐌴𐌹𐌷𐌰𐌽 (gateihan).
