Etymology

From Middle English venereā̆l, venereā̆lle (of or relating to sexual intercourse), from Latin venereus, venerius (of or relating to sexual love),[1] from Venus (Roman goddess of love),[2] from Proto-Indo-European *wenh₁- (to love).
