täytyä

Finnish

(index tä)

Etymology

Possibly derived from täysi (Pre-Finnic *täwde, stem täyde-, täyte-). Related to Ingrian täytyä and Karelian täytyö.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈtæy̯tyæˣ/, [ˈt̪æy̯t̪yæ(ʔ)]
  • Hyphenation: täy‧ty‧ä
  • Rhymes: -æytyæ

Verb

täytyä

  1. (intransitive, impersonal, auxiliary) genitive + 3rd-pers. singular + infinitive = must, have to.
    Minun täytyy nyt lähteä.
    I must leave now.

Usage notes

  • Täytyä expresses absolute necessity to do something, whereas its near synonym pitää does not have as unconditional a nuance as täytyä.
  • Seldom used in negative sentences, in which the synonymous olla pakko is preferred by most speakers.
