Etymology

From Proto-Norse [script needed] (*tanχu-), [script needed] (*tanχwia-). Compare Old Norse and Swedish , tåg. Cognate to Finnish tanhua and Votic tanava (street). The sound change of /ɑ/ -> /æ/ in the first syllable is irregular, the regular variants tanav, tanev can be seen in dialects.
