Etymology

From a Vulgar Latin root *turbulus, itself related to *turbulō, from Latin turbō or from turbula, diminutive of turba (disorderly crowd). Alternatively *turbulus derives from an alteration of turbidus, from the related turba, perhaps influenced by turbulentus (stormy, turbulent). Compare Romanian tulbure.
