First attested 14th century; from Latin trāditiō, trāditiōnem (although the suffix in this word may indicate a semi-learned form, or a formation from trair + -ció; a fully inherited result would have ended in -çó or ; compare the similar case of Spanish traición). Doublet of tradició, a later borrowing.
