Attested since 1851.[1] From Romani čai (girl; woman; wife), a feminine form of čavo (boy). Derived from the root found in the Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀙𑀸𑀯 (chāva), corresponding to Pali छाप (chāpa, the young of an animal).
