tahk

Estonian

Etymology

From Proto-Finno-Permic [Term?]. Cognate to Finnish tahko, Votic tahko (wood block), Udmurt тӥш (tïš, axe eye, backside of a blade), and Komi-Zyrian тыш (tyš, axe eye). The meaning of "hone" seen in the Finnic family is possibly originally from a compound word - *tahkokivi, as seen in Votic tahkotšivi (hone).
