Etymology

From Arabic مَتاع‎ (matāʿ, “thing, possession”). A variety of related forms exists throughout Mediterranean Arabic. In eastern dialects, the unrelated adjective تَبَع‎ (tabaʿ, “belonging”) is also used in a similar way, and there is evidence that both forms may have been merged in some cases (compare Egyptian Arabic بتاع‎ (bitāʿ)). However, the forms in Maghrebi dialects, from which Maltese has sprung, seem to be based on مَتاع‎ (matāʿ) exclusively.
