Vietnamese

Pronunciation

Etymology 1

From Proto-Vietic *k-rɔːrʔ~*kʰ-lɔːrʔ; cognate with Muong khỏl, khỏư and Arem /karɑːlˀ/.

Note: Canis lupus is not, and has never been, native to Vietnam. (Note that the domestic dog is now usually considered a subspecies of Canis lupus, rather than a separate species.) However, Canis aureus cruesemanni is, and resembles a small version of the grey wolf. The term may have originally applied to C. a. cruesemanni, which is still occasionally referred to using this term. (See Sói rừng - Vietnamese Wikipedia.)
