supăra

Romanian

Etymology

From Latin superāre, present active infinitive of superō (surpass, exceed; overflow). The meaning in the Romanian arose from the idea of exceeding or going beyond what can be taken or tolerated. Compare Aromanian shupãr, shupãrari, meaning "to ridicule, make fun of". Compare also the semantic development of French outrer (to exaggerate, outrage), from outre (as well as; besides; on top of).
