From Middle Low German smö̂ken, conflated with Middle Low German smôken, ultimately from Proto-Germanic *smaukiz (smoke) (Middle Low German smôk), either as a Middle Low German derivation or via Old Saxon *smōkian. Cognate with Old English smīecan (> Scots smeek). Compare also Dutch smoken, English smoke, German schmauchen, West Frisian smoke. More at smoke.
