From Proto-Albanian *stalkā, from Proto-Indo-European *stel- 'stalk, stem'. Cognate to Ancient Greek στέλος (stélos, beam), Sanskrit स्थल (sthála, elevation), Middle Low German stale (post)[1] Also compare Old English stalu 'wooden upright' (English stalk), Danish stilk.
