Etymology

From Late Latin sclavus or Sclavus, from Byzantine Greek σκλάβος (sklábos, Slav) or Σκλάβος (Sklábos), which see for more.[1]. Compare Romanian șcheau (Bulgarian, (South) Slav), șchiau, Aromanian shcljau. Doublet of skllav (slave), a later borrowing.
