Etymology

From Middle High German siufzen, alteration of sūften, siuften, based on onomatopoeic verbs in -zen (compare ächzen etc.). Further from Old High German sūftōn, derived from sūfan (to slurp, drink), whence German saufen. Cognate with Dutch zuchten.
