From Vulgar Latin *excarmināre, present active infinitive of *excarminō, from Latin ex- + carminō (to card), from carmen (card for wool, flax). Compare Aromanian scarmin, scãrminari, Calabrese scarminare, Spanish escarmenar, Italian scarmigliare.
