Etymology

From Vulgar Latin *exmŭlgĕre, from Latin ex- + mulgēre (to milk). Compare Aromanian zmulgu, zmuldziri, Italian smungere, Venetian smónzer, Asturian esmucir. An alternative past participle, smult (from Vulgar Latin *exmulctus, from mulctus; cf. Aromanian zmultu, Sardinian multu, murtu), also exists.
