Etymology

From Old Portuguese sotoo, sotão, from Vulgar Latin *subtulum, from Latin subtus[1]. Compare Galician soto (ground floor; cellar) and Spanish sótano (cellar). Less likely from a Vulgar Latin *subtanus[2] (whence Italian sottano), itself also a derivative of subtus (below).
