From alteration of Old Spanish sótalo, from Vulgar Latin *subtulum, from Latin subtus[1]. Compare Portuguese sótão (attic). Less likely from a Vulgar Latin *subtanus (whence Italian sottano), itself also a derivative of subtus (below).
