Cognate with Old High German rarta (“sound, voice, harmony”), Old Norse rǫdd (“voice, speech”), Gothic 𐍂𐌰𐌶𐌳𐌰 (razda, “tongue, speech, language, dialect”), Old English reord (1st and 3rd person singular preterite of rǣdan (“to read”)).
