From Vulgar Latin *perdonāre (compare French pardonner, Catalan and Spanish perdonar, Portuguese perdoar), from Latin per- + dōnō, dōnāre, a loan-translation of a Germanic word represented by Frankish *firgeban (to forgive, give up completely), from fir- + geban. More at forgive.
