Etymology

Probably from Vulgar Latin *peccuīnus, from *pittīnus, perhaps from a Celtic or Frankish [Term?] root (cf. Proto-Celtic *bikko- (small); Old Irish bec, Irish beag, Welsh bach/bychan, Breton bihan). Compare Portuguese pequeno, cf. also French petit.
