parvi

Finnish

Etymology

From Proto-Finno-Ugric *parwɜ or *parɜ-wɜ. Cognates include with Estonian parv (flock, group; raft), Ingrian parvi (flock, group; shelf, balcony), Veps parveh and Khanty пөр (pôr, flock, group; raft). It is not certain if the "group" and "raft, loft, balcony" senses belong together, but the latter is thought to have developed through a stage of "group of logs joined together".
