See also: palló

Finnish

Etymology

From Proto-Germanic *ballô, *balluz.

Pronunciation

  • Rhymes: -ɑlːo

Noun

pallo

  1. ball
  2. balloon
  3. orb, sphere, globe
  4. (mathematics) sphere (see usage notes)
  5. (mathematics, informal) ball (see usage notes)

Usage notes

In mathematics, the term in informal use is mostly used interchangeably for sphere (the cross sections of which are circles) and ball (the cross sections of which are disks), although most authors usually use the term for only one of these concepts in literature, with an increasing tendency to use pallo to mean "sphere". Further distinction may be made with pallopinta for the former and kuula for the latter.
