Etymology

Blend of pal (a close friend) + alimony (support payment from one former spouse to another after a divorce).

Coined 1977 by celebrity divorce lawyer Marvin Mitchelson in suit of his client Michelle Triola Marvin against the actor Lee Marvin.[1]
