From Old French, equivalent to onde + -oyer, possibly corresponding to a Vulgar Latin *undizo, *undizare,[1][2] from Latin unda. Compare Occitan ondejar, Catalan onejar, Italian ondeggiare, Portuguese and Spanish ondear, Romanian undeza.
