Usage notes

Behaves as a masculine noun in most respects (takes the definite article an rather than na in the genitive, does not lenite an adjective in the nominative), but as a feminine noun in that it does not undergo t-prothesis after an in the nominative. Compare an oiread céanna (the same amount) (with no t-prothesis of the noun and no lenition of the adjective) with the masculine an t-oireacht céanna (the same assembly) (with t-prothesis of the noun and no lenition of the adjective) and the feminine an oíche chéanna (with no t-prothesis of the noun and lenition of the adjective).

  • a oiread (as much, so much)
  • ach oiread (either)
  • an oiread, an oiread seo (so much, so many)
