Etymology

From Proto-Mon-Khmer *lpŋaaʔ, an infixed form of Proto-Mon-Khmer *lŋaaʔ (itch); cognate with Muong ngả, Koho lönga (itching between toes), Khmu [ŋaʔ] and Riang [ŋɑʔ²]. Compare also Nghệ An/Hà Tĩnh dialects ngá.
