From Proto-Albanian *(a)ngul, from Proto-Indo-European *ank 'to bend, bow, *flex; wangle; turn; curve, snake coil, anchor'. Compare Latin ungula (a hoof, claw, talon), Old High German angul (fish hook, sting), Tocharian B añcöl (bow, arch, curve), Old Norse Ǫngull (angle, bay). Related to ngel. Alternatively from Proto-Albanian * ̊gull-, from Proto-Indo-European *gwelH- 'to prick'. Cognate to Lithuanian gélti (to prick), gìlti (to get pained, ache). A formation with the prefix (a)n-.
