From Proto-Albanian *(a)ngul, from Proto-Indo-European *ank 'to bend, bow, *flex; wangle; turn; curve, snake coil, anchor'. Compare Latin ungula (“a hoof, claw, talon”), Old High German angul (“fish hook, sting”), Tocharian B añcöl (“bow, arch, curve”), Old Norse Ǫngull (“angle, bay”). Related to ngel. Alternatively from Proto-Albanian * ̊gull-, from Proto-Indo-European *gwelH- 'to prick'. Cognate to Lithuanian gélti (“to prick”), gìlti (“to get pained, ache”). A formation with the prefix (a)n-.
