Etymology
From Proto-Vietic *-mɨəŋ. Possibly from Proto-Mon-Khmer *()ɓaaŋ (“canal”); however, "Vietnamese vocalism suggests earlier *bVʔaŋ"[1]. Compare Proto-Tai *ʰmɯəŋᴬ (“ditch”), whence Thai เหมือง (mʉ̌ʉang) and Lao ເໝືອງ (mư̄ang).
