From miell, because of its color; compare Serbo-Croatian лабуд 'id', from Proto-Indo-European h₂elbʰ 'white'. Structurally identical with Lithuanian melmuõ (kidney stone), Old Saxon melm (sand, dust) and Old High German melm (dust), both Germanic forms from *malmaz, *malmōn.
