  • (file)
  • Rhymes: -ɪŋn̩

Verb

misslingen (class 3 strong, third-person singular simple present misslingt, past tense misslang, past participle misslungen, auxiliary sein)

  1. (intransitive) to fail; to be unsuccessful

Usage notes

  • Before 1996, this word and its various forms were spelled with an ß, i.e. mißlingen, mißlingt, mißlang, mißlungen... Since the German Spelling Reform of 1996, this word and its various forms are spelled with ss instead.
  • The verb misslingen is rarely used with a human subject, so it rarely appears in the first-person or second-person forms. To indicate failure related to a person, the dative case is used, as illustrated in the example above.
