From the same source as maksts (q.v.): Proto-Baltic *mak-, from Proto-Indo-European *mak- “small (leather) bag or pouch.” Cognates include Lithuanian mãkas, Old Prussian dantimax “gums” (dantis “tooth”), Old Church Slavonic мошьна (mošĭna), Russian мошна (moshná) “small bag or pouch,” Old High German maga, German Magen “stomach.”[1]
