Sino-Vietnamese word from 鍊 (“to smelt”) and 金 (“gold; metal”).[1] Compare Chinese 鍊金術 (luyện kim thuật, “alchemy”, literally “the art of smelting gold”), Japanese 錬金術 (renkinjutsu, “alchemy”), Korean 연금술 (yeon-geumsul, “alchemy”). Also compare Chinese 冶金學 (dã kim học, “metallurgy”).
