Etymology

From Proto-Albanian *laiša, close to the Balto-Slavic word for 'foliage'. Compare Lithuanian laĩškos (“leaf”), Latvian laĩska (“leaf on a linen stalk; stalk”), Slavic *listь 'leaf'[1]. Alternatively from Proto-Albanian *(u)laś-, from Proto-Indo-European *Huelh1- 'wool'. Cognate to Latin vellus (“wool, fleece, skin”)[2].
