Etymology

From Arabic إِلَى (ʾilā). The -ej- is due to backformation from the personal forms (Arabic stem ʾilay-), while the final -n was added by analogy with the dual suffix -ejn, which builds its personal forms in the same fashion; compare lejnlejja, lejk with għajnejn (eyes)għajnejja, għajnejk, etc.
