Contraction of Old Polish księgyni (“sovereign”), from Proto-Slavic *kъnęgyni, from *kъnędzь (“prince”). Cognate with Lower Sorbian kněni, Upper Sorbian knjeni and Russian княгиня (knjaginja, “princess”).
