From Proto-Balto-Slavic (a)iˀ‹skāˀtei; compare Latvian iẽskât (to search for lice), Proto-Slavic *jьskàti (look for). Ultimately from the Proto-Indo-European present *h₂is-sk- of *h₂eys- (wish, desire). Cognates include Proto-Germanic *aiskō (demand, question, inspection), Sanskrit इच्छति (iccháti, to wish, strive for), Old Armenian այց (aycʿ, visit, search), Latin aeruscō (beg, ask for).
